Woodblock print

Artist Statement and Bio: Julianna Kirwin’s original woodblock prints represent current issues and portraits of important women who have contributed to the strength of our nation and region. Using her skill as a printmaker she states, “I love the carved line, the smell of the ink, the press of the paper against the plate and then the surprise of the texture and color released onto the paper or cloth.”

Receiving her undergrad in Art Education, she completed her Masters in Bilingual Education in 2010 but her training as an artist has largely taken place in Oaxaca Mexico. Exhibitions in the US and Mexico were usually accompanied by her workshops, using printmaking as a way to bridge cultures in a variety of settings such as the Museum of International Folk Art, Casa Cuatro Cultural Center in Guanajuato , Mexico and rural schools in New Mexico.

Ruth Bader Ginsberg was an inspiration for all of us in her work establishing laws that protect gender equity, laws that changed the lives of so many of us today. I chose this woodblock print of her because of her fairness to all people and respect for the rights that we all hold dear. In a public address given in 2018, she praised immigrants saying they play a vital part in cleansing the stains of discrimination from the country.
