Artist Statement: Emmett Marks, from Monterey, California, has been drawing for as long as he can remember. At sixteen, his work has inadvertently become a vehicle for social commentary, driven by topics such as the Parkland killings and the pandemic. He would insist that while he is optimistic about the future (as much as a sixteen-year-old can be), he is not influenced, following his own muse. His work is currently produced digitally with a focus on the exploration of light. Recurring themes include studies of human posture, gesture drawings, heavy artillery, cultural references, and Craig, an original line drawing of a signature character who appears in most work. Craig is lurking in the graffiti on the subway seat in this submission, entitled ‘It Doesn’t and Shouldn’t Have a Name’. A sophomore at the Chartwell School, Emmett is now taking a college credit drawing class via dual enrolment in Monterey Penninsula College. His biggest goals of the moment are to hone his craft to a more professional level and to travel to Mars. Conscious of the luxuries afforded him in his safe white middle-class life, with the latest gadgets and other perks, Emmett searches for ways to recognize the struggles of others in the world such as these asylum seekers, most often expressed through his art.
