Evangelio según san Lucas 1: 5-23
En el tiempo en que Herodes era rey del país de los judíos, vivía un sacerdote llamado Zacarías, perteneciente al turno de Abías. Su esposa, llamada Isabel, descendía de Aarón. Los dos eran justos delante de Dios y obedecían los mandatos y leyes del Señor de manera intachable. Pero no tenían hijos, porque Isabel era estéril; además, los dos eran ya muy ancianos. Un día en que al grupo sacerdotal de Zacarías le tocó el turno de oficiar delante de Dios, según era costumbre entre los sacerdotes, le tocó en suerte a Zacarías entrar en el santuario del templo del Señor para quemar incienso. In the days of King Herod of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly order of Abijah. His wife was a descendant of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. Both of them were righteous before God, living blamelessly according to all the commandments and regulations of the Lord. But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were getting on in years. Once when he was serving as priest before God and his section was on duty he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the sanctuary of the Lord and offer incense. Now at the time of the incense-offering, the whole assembly of the people was praying outside. Then there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was terrified; and fear overwhelmed him. But the angel said to him, ‘Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John. You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He must never drink wine or strong drink; even before his birth he will be filled with the Holy Spirit. He will turn many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. With the spirit and power of Elijah he will go before him, to turn the hearts of parents to their children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.’ Zechariah said to the angel, ‘How will I know that this is so? For I am an old man, and my wife is getting on in years. ’The angel replied, ‘I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. But now, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time, you will become mute, unable to speak, until the day these things occur.’ Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah, and wondered at his delay in the sanctuary. When he did come out, he could not speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision in the sanctuary. He kept motioning to them and remained unable to speak. When his time of service was ended, he went to his home.

Advent is the time when we prepare our hearts for the revelation of God incarnate, Emmanuel, God with us. Advent is a time of waiting, preparing, yearning, stillness…a time of hope. It is a time of “we’re almost there” excitement. How do we prepare while waiting?
John the Baptist calls for repentance in preparation, to clear the way so that we can clearly see. We are to straighten paths, remove purposeless trees, and burn the chaff.
John the Baptist was the son of elderly parents, Elizabeth and Zechariah. John’s birth is miraculous. His father, Zechariah, a priest of the Temple, was visited by the angel Gabriel and struck speechless because he was terrified and doubted Gabriel’s foretelling of John’s birth.
Six months later, the angel Gabriel visits Mary, announcing the divine conception of Jesus. But unlike Zechariah, Mary does not fear or doubt. She instead gently inquires and gives herself to the will of God. “Here I am, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.”
Gabriel says to both Zechariah and Mary “Do not be afraid,” a phrase that appears over 365 times in the Bible, more than one time for each day of the year. The Bible is replete with instances of angels providing comfort through these four simple words.
Angels are a significant part of our Christian heritage and clearly messengers from God. But other than movies and art, where are the angels today who say “fear not”?
Personally, I believe there are angels everywhere, even if we cannot see them; that a God who loved us so much that he became incarnate continues to be in relationship with us through the Holy Spirit and through angels. Always.
But it is more than that. Just as we are invited to be Christ to others and to see Christ in others, we are invited to be angels to others and to see the angel in the other. We are invited to be angels to those we know and those we do not know. What a wonderful gift we give someone when we help them “fear not.”
Several years ago, my daughter was struggling to pay a credit card bill that had unreasonable terms. It was a no-win situation, causing her great stress and pain. While visiting, I took a copy of the bill. When home, I paid the balance. For Christmas that year, I sent her a card saying: “Everyone has angels around them. I am always one of yours. I have paid off your credit card bill. Merry Christmas.” The gift isn’t the money. The gift is the healing of the pain and stress.
“The angel of the Lord came down, and glory shone around…Fear not said he, for mighty dread had seized their troubled mind; ‘Glad tidings of great joy I bring to you and all mankind.’”

Juan el Bautista era hijo de padres ancianos, Isabel y Zacarías. El nacimiento de John es milagroso. Hace varios años, mi hija estaba luchando para pagar una factura de tarjeta de crédito que tenía términos irrazonables.
